If you are looking for a career in upholstery or soft furnishings then you should be qualified with a high level of skill and a good understanding of the legal requirements. The Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) Diploma qualifications in upholstery or soft furnishings have been developed over a number of years by experienced practitioners in the Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors industry and are designed to develop and reinforce the skills learnt. You will not only learn how to do something but why it is done, and how it fits into context with the numerous variations of upholstered furniture or styles of windows.
We pride ourselves in the quality of work that our students produce. Good quality upholstery is achieved by eye, feel and judgement and these skills take time and practice to acquire. Every chair is different so we aim to give you the skills and information required to adapt to each individual piece of furniture. We will teach you how to strip back to the frame, repair and reupholster different styles of upholstery from the most basis drop-in seat through to the more complex armchairs and sofas.
The AMUSF Soft Furnishings Diploma will give you guidance and the practical skills required to measure, produce and fit a range of curtains, blinds, cushions, bedding and loose covers as well as the requirements for running a soft furnishings business.
With a consistent high level of credit and distinctions for their work our students also enjoy the added value of our enrichment programme where students have the opportunity to participate in various industry based visits and competitions. All our qualification courses are assessed by independent practitioners of the craft with many years experience.
"It became swiftly apparent to me that during the course that the more I began to learn the more I realised I didn't know. This new syllabus is offering a broader and more useful skills base. I chose to do the course over one year, but I think on reflection that a student just needs to have more time to let things sink in, which these courses allow". Charlotte A, Hampshire
If you are looking for something less formal or just want to produce work for yourself then we can offer either weekly day-time or evening classes. On these courses you will work at your own pace on your own pieces under our expert guidance. If you have little or no experience we suggest that you start with something simple and progress from there.
We also offer a range of short taster courses in Upholstery, Chair Caning, Curtain Making, Roman Blinds and Cushion Making. These courses are a great introduction to the crafts and are ideal Christmas or Birthday Presents for anyone with an interest in the crafts.
Learn how to Measure, Fit and Fix Blinds, Curtain Tracks and Poles Professionally. This is a two-day practical course for professionals or those aspiring to become professional curtain and blind track fitters.
This Business Set-up course gives advice and information on setting-up and running a professional upholstery or soft furnishings business.
