LOOKING FOR A CAREER IN UPHOLSTERY OR SOFT FURNISHINGS?
Here at Wendy Shorter Interiors we pride ourselves in the quality of work our students produce. Upholstery and Soft Furnishings are crafts that have been developed over hundreds of years. Crafts that are learnt over time and with practice. There are no quick fixes or magic formulas.
Anyone can produce poor quality upholstery but good quality upholstery is achieved by eye, feel and judgement and these skills take time and practice to acquire. What took five years to achieve in the past, can't now be learnt in just six weeks. Every chair is different so we aim to give you the information required so that you can adapt the skills learnt to each individual piece of furniture. We will teach you how to strip back to the frame, repair and reupholster different styles of upholstery from the most basis drop-in seat through to the more complex armchairs and sofas. However, short courses are only a snap-shot taster into the craft.
If you are looking for a career in upholstery or soft furnishings then you should be qualified with a high level of skill and a good understanding of the legal requirements. The Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) qualifications have been developed over a number of years by experienced practitioners in the industry. These qualifications have been developed to give you a good grounding in traditional upholstery and bespoke soft furnishing skills. They are structured so that you consolidate your learning. You will not only learn how to do something but why it is done, and how it fits into context with the numerous variations of upholstered furniture or styles of windows.
A high proportion of our students have achieved credits and distinctions for their work and, of the past students that have studied here, one third are now either working for themselves or for other upholsterers and soft furnishers, including working for royal warrant holders, interior designers and other AMUSF members.
LEISURE & EVENING CLASSES
If you are looking for something less formal or just want to produce work for yourself then we can offer either weekly day-time leisure classes or evening classes, a one-week summer course or two-day short courses. On these courses you will work at your own pace on your own pieces, where you will be given full instruction and guidance. If you have little or no experience then don't be too adventurous, start with something simple and progress from there.
Please note that leisure classes will not give you sufficient expertise to qualify you to do work for the general public. If you wish to follow a career in the interiors industry then you should have a professional qualification like those offered by the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers.
LOOKING FOR A CAREER IN SOFT FURNISHINGS
We offer the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers Stage 2 and 3 Soft Furnishings qualifications. These are one-year courses that have been designed by experience practitioners for those wishing to work within the Furniuture, Furnishings and Interiors industry or who want to start a small business of their own. You will be given full instruction and guidance in how to produce a full range of curtains, blinds, cushions and bedding and the requirements of running a small soft furnishings business.
