Accredited by the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers, these courses can lead to a professional qualification and are designed for those wishing to work within the trade or who wish to start their own business.







Upholstery Courses are offered at Level 2 and Level 3.

Both courses can be done as a one-day per week course, but the Level 2 course can also be done as a two-day per week course, which should enable you to complete both levels within a year.


During the course you will study and/or produce the following:

  • Basic Design Skills: sketching, colour co-ordination and scale drawings
  • Health & Safety relevant to the work place
  • Use of tools and materials
  • Basic sewing machine skills
  • Fabric pattern matching & trimmings
  • An understanding of the Fire Regulations
  • Upholster a drop-in seat using traditional methods (exercise)
  • Upholster a stitched & stuffed seat (exercise)
  • Upholster a stitched & stuffed sprung side-chair
  • Upholster a sprung arm (exercise)
  • Deep buttoning (exercise)
  • Upholster a sprung TV/Fireside/Nursing Chair - traditionally
  • Make a Box Cushion with Zip (exercise) 
  • Produce a project on 20th Century Furniture Design

Two-Days per week: Mondays & Tuesdays
Starting: Monday 6th September 2010 - 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One-Day per week: Wednesdays
Starting: Wednesday 8th September 2010 - 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In order to do the Level 3 qualification, you will need to have passed Level 2 first.  If you have physical evidence and that all the necessary elements of Level 2 have been achieved, it may be possible to start at Level 3.

During the course you will study and/or produce the following:

  • Basic Design Skills: sketching, colour co-ordination & scale drawings
  • Health & Safety relevant to the work place
  • Industrial sewing machine technology
  • Fabric recognition and composition
  • Fabric pattern matching and trimmings
  • Estimates and costings
  • Window treatment: full-length interlined curtains with hand-stitched headings
  • Curtain tie-backs of varying shapes
  • A shaped and trimmed firm pelmet
  • Sheer curtain
  • Box cushion: piped with zip
  • Blinds: Roman, London, Reef
  • Two decorative scatter cushions
  • Bed Valance: fitted, gathered or pleated
  • Throw-over Bedspread - commercially viable
  • Project on types of suspension systems for various styles of window

One-day per week: Thursdays
Starting Thursday 9th September 2010 - 9.30 a.m. t0 4 p.m.


Tuition Fee: £1728.00 + VAT
Admin & Registration Fee: £58.00 + VAT
Studio Charge: £300.00 + VAT

Notes:

All courses are based around the academic year: September to July

Studio Charges cover the cost of materials used in the exercise pieces that cannot be recycled

All prices are subject to VAT at the appropriate rate

Places on these courses are limited and will be awarded on application and interview.
